Aaaahhhhh we are finally here! For over six decades, Barbie has held a special place in the hearts of both children and adults, worldwide. Mattel's iconic doll has become a cultural icon, sparking imagination, creativity, and countless hours of play. So how could I resist the idea of creating a Barbie inspired photoshoot to celebrate her powerful influence on children and adults alike, with her movie premiering across the US tonight!
Beyond being a beloved doll, Barbie has also had a significant impact on shaping the aspirations and perceptions of kids through the years. If you could dream it, Barbie could do it! And all while looking FABULOUS!
One of the primary reasons we love Barbie is her limitless capacity to inspire imagination. With a myriad of different dolls representing various careers, lifestyles, and fashion styles, Barbie has provided us an opportunity to create stories and dream big! Whether she's an astronaut exploring outer space or a doctor saving lives in a hospital, Barbie encouraged us to think beyond societal norms and explore diverse possibilities.
While we know that Barbie has evolved over the years to become a more empowering and diverse figure, we still can't help but celebrate all things pink with the current Barbie-mania atmosphere, as we finally get to see one of our favorite icons come to life right in front of us!
Our photoshoot was definitely modeled after the 'stereotype' that barbie is most known for, while mixing in the quirkiness of her beloved animated movies over the years. It's important to note, that Barbie's evolution has given young kids positive role models they can relate to, fostering a sense of inclusivity and acceptance from an early age.
The modern Barbie includes dolls of various ethnicities, body types, and abilities, reflecting the world's diversity and embracing the idea that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. I'm sure I'm not alone in appreciating this change so that kids can continue to see themselves in the many different ways that Barbie is portrayed.
In more recent years, Barbie played a pivotal role in challenging traditional gender stereotypes. While the doll initially faced criticism for perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards, Mattel responded by launching more diverse and career-oriented dolls. This shift has helped break the mold of traditional gender roles, encouraging all genders to play with dolls and nurturing their empathic nature.
I want to send a big THANK YOU to my current Creative Dream Team - one of whom asked me to do this photoshoot! I was instantly on board and we cooked up the whole thing within an hour's time. Not only was the premier literally one week away, but I had just styled a male client that was the PERFECT guy to play our Ken!
My last minute change was to ask our newest Hair and makeup professional, Melissa Dupont, with @beauty.md if she wanted in on the shoot since this was totally her colocrful vibe! She not only said YES to hair and makeup design - she said YES to playing the part of the splitz Barbie from the movie! She's literally my hero!
So from Friday to Monday, we had our styling, our team, our design, our locations. The only thing that could possibly top it was if someone rode by on a vintage Vespa and stopped to let us use it in the shoot! Manifesting works, people! The whole shoot came together and we had so much fun creating together!
If you are a teen or high school senior interested in concept styled group shoots like this, or even behind the scenes creative support, then you are probably a great fit to book your senior portraits with us and be part of the Creative Team! Signing up for the team means you get the opportunity for extra photoshoots like this one when they come up! You can learn more by hitting the Dream Team button below.
